Tonight’s HW is on a piece of paper turned sideways.  It says “3-4 Exercises” on top.

It can also be found on page 133 of your green algebra textbook — you’re doing problems #1-12.

And here’s a hint: when they say QUANTITY, you know to use PARENTHESES.  For example, I would read
3(x + 2)
as “three times the quantity x plus 2″.

I know you guys don’t like error analysis.  I even know why you don’t like it.  But I don’t know what to do instead.

So… here’s your chance to tell me what we should do instead, and get extra credit for it!

1. What should we do instead of error analysis that would help you learn from your own errors? Explain your plan in as much detail as possible. For example, if you think each student should have a one-on-one conference with Ms. Krishnan, when should that hap How long should it take? What will the other students be doing while this is happening.
2. Why is your plan better than the kind of error analysis that we do?

This is worth up to 8 points of extra credit on homework — that’s two whole assignments! — if you do a good job.  I might ask you some questions about your ideas, so be sure to check back and see if I’ve commented on your proposal.  Also, feel free to comment on other students’ proposals, if you like them or if you dislike them — but be sure to tell why.

Reasons you need to do the error analysis:

1. It counts for today’s classwork grade.
2. It counts for tonight’s homework grade.
3. You can get up to 2 points back on your quiz for each one that you do.
4. If you turn them in, you can make up the test and try to get a higher grade.
5. Last but not least… It is important to learn from your own errors so that you don’t make the same mistakes over and over.

4x – 3y = 16

#15: Solve using elimination.
3x – 10y = -25
5x – 20y = -55

#20 Travel Agency A travel agency offers two Chicago outings. Plan A includes hotel accommodations for three nights and two pairs of baseball tickets worth a total of $557.  Plan B includes hotel accommodations for five nights and four pairs of baseball tickets worth a total of $974.  Let x represent the cost in dollars of one night’s hotel accommodations and let y represent the cost in dollars of one pair of baseball tickets.
(a) Write a linear system you could use to find the cost of one night’s hotel accommodations and the cost of one pair of baseball tickets.
(b) Solve the linear system to find the cost of one night’s hotel accommodations and the cost of one pair of baseball tickets.
